Many years, tons of quilts and things made, I haven't hurt myself with the rotary blade beyond a couple tiny nicks. <br />
I pulled four FQs, and ended up with super cute mixed sets for teacher gifts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLGM78Lp5PArgjsipvJu1K56hun_AEgBfkaQxOXpFLeTMn6kApBB3G-Xb95sq1u3myR3x0Se2P3smtN-JJI6Jq8bp2frgAkEG0HZEbQsyazd7iYos23ZLQA34tsUJitc2_ni8/s1600/all.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLGM78Lp5PArgjsipvJu1K56hun_AEgBfkaQxOXpFLeTMn6kApBB3G-Xb95sq1u3myR3x0Se2P3smtN-JJI6Jq8bp2frgAkEG0HZEbQsyazd7iYos23ZLQA34tsUJitc2_ni8/s640/all.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
(Half way through I decided to make one of the pleated masks into my normal style - to give the teachers one of each type. I needed a different fabric for the lining when I made those.)<br />
<br />
I thought Mr. Andrews would prefer a more masculine mask.... a straight quarter yard is also perfect!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUzqY23AGzzK1rpWEAXK6FfhJfSxRVHsOOM-ITNomvVmp_xWFCMx2SVn4t9rkbA8C8aje1EYfrky4b5IeOrCTepcBcrN6fLxk3H5zOHsGQIwjLzWXwMtmLyQDm7TW35huiqGU/s1600/july+set.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUzqY23AGzzK1rpWEAXK6FfhJfSxRVHsOOM-ITNomvVmp_xWFCMx2SVn4t9rkbA8C8aje1EYfrky4b5IeOrCTepcBcrN6fLxk3H5zOHsGQIwjLzWXwMtmLyQDm7TW35huiqGU/s640/july+set.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
One cut 8" wide and the full width of the fabric can yield two mask cuts and a piece for the pouch. I mixed a couple making his 4th of July set.<br />
<br />
But back to the FQs.<br />
<br />
To make a mask I use 8"x15" pieces (or 8x14 if that fits better). One pouch needs 4.5"x12" <br />
<br />
Decide which way you want the print to sit on the finished mask. The short side runs across your face.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There are a million tutorials for the pleated masks, but I thought I would share what I've found is easiest for me when inserting the elastic.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8UW7ftddnLOxsVappqfF6F1f3XmKjsPXMtnZ1A8rT4VXcpl7sj-bPCEnPldt-qeQDD0WbFVewUdKXJ5sYXnb4f9HOJ1O4OOiSIBDUeJuYRM8nf-TIUg-UtUPXisyNMuNKmZE/s1600/m1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8UW7ftddnLOxsVappqfF6F1f3XmKjsPXMtnZ1A8rT4VXcpl7sj-bPCEnPldt-qeQDD0WbFVewUdKXJ5sYXnb4f9HOJ1O4OOiSIBDUeJuYRM8nf-TIUg-UtUPXisyNMuNKmZE/s640/m1.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Press the piece in half - right sides together.<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Mark the top edge about 3/4" from corner. Sometimes I tack my elastic at this point, on this outside end - other times I don't.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2t3X3CSzlKAlTTOnFXouQwwKt8UKYoPKo5fPih3xduVKYIGvoM2bso8O8Zp-I4eaVSMr0dKc-W-wJATP1BU2QHBVUpMyfjh5uZ0mn4076s2VVglPP7hrFFc1Nqyf2hE5dVRI/s1600/m5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh2t3X3CSzlKAlTTOnFXouQwwKt8UKYoPKo5fPih3xduVKYIGvoM2bso8O8Zp-I4eaVSMr0dKc-W-wJATP1BU2QHBVUpMyfjh5uZ0mn4076s2VVglPP7hrFFc1Nqyf2hE5dVRI/s640/m5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I use 1/8" wide elastic - 6.75" long. This seems to work for both men and women for a quick trip into a store.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Take the whole thing to your machine. Lay the elastic at the fold, lined up with the raw edge. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbUeTolYyw1cizRbSpf094Aj-NZHWB_EB91EnPlYtf8RauU6b4iwN0OiRUZpvEhoRlEnhcfH78gSzOPo7rifcYziRE3O_nPoer50CAuCUUM3UeAviT8thekZEq98SgkWB5fKw/s1600/m6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjbUeTolYyw1cizRbSpf094Aj-NZHWB_EB91EnPlYtf8RauU6b4iwN0OiRUZpvEhoRlEnhcfH78gSzOPo7rifcYziRE3O_nPoer50CAuCUUM3UeAviT8thekZEq98SgkWB5fKw/s640/m6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Close the fold and start stitching here, using a 1/2" seam allowance. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The most annoying part of the elastic is that it tries to scoot away when you stitch over it. Starting at the fold - with the elastic against the fold, eliminates the scooting on this end.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOYuVXPGu3gi-RWmpafmzglWpEubgtrQ16hvhPUgyV712Jzg3euIzNmM5ImXVts2s7SRsDSiWx5Afy8T0TMvJa2JGSyT0iJQUEXJLpyL8PTSjpalXzAXt1oWRtENw6Sjr_C0U/s1600/m7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOYuVXPGu3gi-RWmpafmzglWpEubgtrQ16hvhPUgyV712Jzg3euIzNmM5ImXVts2s7SRsDSiWx5Afy8T0TMvJa2JGSyT0iJQUEXJLpyL8PTSjpalXzAXt1oWRtENw6Sjr_C0U/s640/m7.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Once you get to the other end and around the corner, I stop. Leave a gap for turning, then start back at the fold for the other side. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Pleat and finish.....I haven't figured out any other process optimizing bits on the last steps yet. </div>

But the FQs do make for super cute sets!<br />

Horrible souvenir? <br />
<br />
At the least, there's a super cute little pouch that could be used for holding dog-walk bags or other random things.<br />

<br />
I came up with four mixed sets of corona virus protection fun, with four FQs. I'll show you more info on that later. <br />
<br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">a-dor-able fabric - Summer Side by Dana Willard</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<br />
We'll start with the little pouch that can hold one mask. Snap it onto a belt loop, toss it into your glove box or purse, and a nice clean mask is ready to go!<br />
<br />
Cut a piece of fabric 4.5" x 12" - then take 2" off the end for making the tab.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirbQb1DE1uqRWezQ6Jbmx1pHtoOrZ0oQCQHhV0puGRbZGatTHJQirBhX1UCV4o83D_s-oxXh0c3jULBoYBlOwNkfrgtxkBQsaSVV4C3D8Kk4xTpWCcEBDGf962OqjL-QPptsU/s1600/3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirbQb1DE1uqRWezQ6Jbmx1pHtoOrZ0oQCQHhV0puGRbZGatTHJQirBhX1UCV4o83D_s-oxXh0c3jULBoYBlOwNkfrgtxkBQsaSVV4C3D8Kk4xTpWCcEBDGf962OqjL-QPptsU/s640/3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The tab is totally optional. But handy and fun! <br />
<br />
Make the tab by folding in half to find the middle, turn one end down about 1/4", fold each end to meet in the center, then fold in half again.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
To prevent frayed edges inside the pouch, I use a serger for the long fabric sides. You could also trim with pinking shears or run a bead of FrayCheck down the raw edge.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKzDNXJxuOJ3aYRXaKsgqnjiBSMH91KTllCqbP2gIugLSyhaiHVN3cyTDizrE4jPPwWypBzlIdPF4tEzsb3NSKNpvmi6lHwV4u2MTR_Kgvu00V1-cMDASxvD_s4aYTt-PQVI4/s1600/5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKzDNXJxuOJ3aYRXaKsgqnjiBSMH91KTllCqbP2gIugLSyhaiHVN3cyTDizrE4jPPwWypBzlIdPF4tEzsb3NSKNpvmi6lHwV4u2MTR_Kgvu00V1-cMDASxvD_s4aYTt-PQVI4/s640/5.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Next, fold both short ends in twice then topstitch, for a nice clean flap.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOn-hP9cHHl07o1x5ygwK7gAojXQ9_HclRMNFVnwQXAZ96riq3HhQPmwZhGV_U4amHjv9GRhloSdpuEiScoJaHMmEU0Y-MqPbC4yATYIYlt4-Q7N8bIt70acRzXWHSzEcjIP0/s1600/6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhOn-hP9cHHl07o1x5ygwK7gAojXQ9_HclRMNFVnwQXAZ96riq3HhQPmwZhGV_U4amHjv9GRhloSdpuEiScoJaHMmEU0Y-MqPbC4yATYIYlt4-Q7N8bIt70acRzXWHSzEcjIP0/s640/6.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Fold your fabric into thirds, overlapping in the center just a tad. <br />
<br />
My pouches are about 3.75" wide. Lightly press to mark the creases. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaApvnJnO5cLmELGjMM5-auPZM3tsk0nBZUG1Drgb2Hc8yecNqMnT8ar3g2Fhbuk8N8mpReuXH2bMvz5EZSqx4jbZV3yzPfx6Tg-kTbyFmIYQ2Kx-pTcGJfhyvpuk_Bdses3o/s1600/8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaApvnJnO5cLmELGjMM5-auPZM3tsk0nBZUG1Drgb2Hc8yecNqMnT8ar3g2Fhbuk8N8mpReuXH2bMvz5EZSqx4jbZV3yzPfx6Tg-kTbyFmIYQ2Kx-pTcGJfhyvpuk_Bdses3o/s640/8.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lay the raw edge of the tab along one side, in the center section, near a crease. Then fold the pretty sides together.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp2rS6G3TFJVq5zrO2HPKkewmKjrMWTXPIgEYaHanYUUPlAg891oADy03vOiRkBZG0qJ4xPwMmPVTVtnzRKkreGCFrfyOcl41agO-H_ggfYGwKzBxc9UISNL17xXIJDmi76_I/s1600/9.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhp2rS6G3TFJVq5zrO2HPKkewmKjrMWTXPIgEYaHanYUUPlAg891oADy03vOiRkBZG0qJ4xPwMmPVTVtnzRKkreGCFrfyOcl41agO-H_ggfYGwKzBxc9UISNL17xXIJDmi76_I/s640/9.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Make sure you turn the tab up a little, or you will catch it in the other side seam. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then you would have to pull out the seam ripper. And that's no fun.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioi_piRNVlQr3w_GwwFpXO7SjwTvMAsnAM1KFCERS1Va-P-ebeEUghT9o_C3Nt8aW8CJJTMXNILSxj2_nHWF0HjILHkqCYpheFt4a_MhTcNtD6W68YVn4bIeVOc8UHerDg-Zo/s1600/10.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEioi_piRNVlQr3w_GwwFpXO7SjwTvMAsnAM1KFCERS1Va-P-ebeEUghT9o_C3Nt8aW8CJJTMXNILSxj2_nHWF0HjILHkqCYpheFt4a_MhTcNtD6W68YVn4bIeVOc8UHerDg-Zo/s640/10.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Sew down both open edges using a 3/8" seam.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzlZLHZMJz2DVq6LDTVrCoAMC6SohA5dIY_YqorbS03AOuJb4rN0RXM3g1ZJn8gpeypOwYas5BrJj3ht_hDaCgnvinruPnsdLsc8EIFU7T1gvjC4H35sgkqX0X75-BZ4cTRHY/s1600/11.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzlZLHZMJz2DVq6LDTVrCoAMC6SohA5dIY_YqorbS03AOuJb4rN0RXM3g1ZJn8gpeypOwYas5BrJj3ht_hDaCgnvinruPnsdLsc8EIFU7T1gvjC4H35sgkqX0X75-BZ4cTRHY/s640/11.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then I go back and sew once more about 1/4" in, where the tab and the overlaps are.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Just for a little extra strength at the stress points.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis5wD5iQ-lp_LVdBlPU9Rv1rH1HluGYLiDTqr1L6_aHKHjjDWLhoBd4i-EFYTsCyAoF_BaQxkdcJeQ8XAc6TzXUq3a7PoOD9fq92IDtyGUJBnR9oBpk8nhVGqOmMdUBmN90lI/s1600/12.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEis5wD5iQ-lp_LVdBlPU9Rv1rH1HluGYLiDTqr1L6_aHKHjjDWLhoBd4i-EFYTsCyAoF_BaQxkdcJeQ8XAc6TzXUq3a7PoOD9fq92IDtyGUJBnR9oBpk8nhVGqOmMdUBmN90lI/s640/12.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
That was fast! Flip right side out.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Poke the corners with a chopstick. Or something pointy, but not too pokey.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGbarYlm5a8rgtw4BGXyKMteXgriRmNpKZEdX18RCJ4OqHWYTzDtGOFLAXSu3pZWCNEtFY8i39P70jm7255fvSzZo5oUMb4B8LUBJINU1hJMkOV_MNzho3fw3hhfGmYbhJMgc/s1600/13.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1068" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGbarYlm5a8rgtw4BGXyKMteXgriRmNpKZEdX18RCJ4OqHWYTzDtGOFLAXSu3pZWCNEtFY8i39P70jm7255fvSzZo5oUMb4B8LUBJINU1hJMkOV_MNzho3fw3hhfGmYbhJMgc/s640/13.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now just to finish up the tab. I placed my snaps 3/4" in from the end - any closer to the end, and it was hard to pull open the snap. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then the other goes 2" down from there. You could also use velcro, or even stitch both ends into the seam for a plain loop.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFQxmlcW0uVQqIzedJgn_JVl3CyDAiuBLRIIxkEgV9JEGwux5SjgM_2EK9MtIyHc6g9t8fNvEA4_sAX_mScS9geB9UIv-1cWe8Ybm7X7GivPpxoJGA94QkMtSou5b90jt0ZJc/s1600/14.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgFQxmlcW0uVQqIzedJgn_JVl3CyDAiuBLRIIxkEgV9JEGwux5SjgM_2EK9MtIyHc6g9t8fNvEA4_sAX_mScS9geB9UIv-1cWe8Ybm7X7GivPpxoJGA94QkMtSou5b90jt0ZJc/s640/14.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I use KAM snaps. I have a boatload of snaps and an awesome press from when I was making Mara's cloth diapers. </div>

DONE! Now to put a mask inside. </div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
As a note, I made a few and ran them through the washing machine. As if I had been out and needed to wash my mask and maybe also the pouch when I got home. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The pouch washed up beautifully. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I tested topstitching the pouch a bit, but it wasn't needed to help hold its shape and it made the pouch lines look a little less clean.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Next up, cutting info if you want to make some mask and pouch sets with your cool fat quarters!</div>

<br />
PLEASE CLEAN THE LINT OUT OF YOUR MACHINE<br />
<br />
Before Mara came, I had a grand time as a trained Bernina service tech. I had machines come in that had so much lint that it was like a piece of felt inside!<br />
<br />
When your machine is clean, it makes a big difference in how smoothly your machine runs. Also, if you have skipped stitches or your bobbin is jumping around, sometimes it is because the bobbin area is jammed full of lint.<br />
<br />
Things don't look too messy right here. But I know things are lurking inside....<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRiq7r3VEDmvRYaBYvplxz7OqEyDPib9GSOVuUJZs2CojbgbQAIDNVeMxeg_CutEfDG8uS4-Jrj87eGX3k9q0NaG9okYbXxtXvAu0hyphenhyphen_MYxYAc7BmkJmk17G4Dl7OKHYTLHfU/s1600/screws.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgRiq7r3VEDmvRYaBYvplxz7OqEyDPib9GSOVuUJZs2CojbgbQAIDNVeMxeg_CutEfDG8uS4-Jrj87eGX3k9q0NaG9okYbXxtXvAu0hyphenhyphen_MYxYAc7BmkJmk17G4Dl7OKHYTLHfU/s640/screws.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Take the foot off - gets it out of the way. You might take your needle out, too. Then you won't stab yourself and it probably needs to be replaced. Unscrew whatever big screws you see in your needle plate.<br />

<br />
Carefully remove your bobbin case. It's just sitting in there.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoGyDF1SbtvOO03_6NdMOm6tzhd80cZ0cftt4vDXfqnmYOrgyJ8oYMRt0iXSj4dJbcoeseANODukojm9ImWEnlg-5G-ExM5OgyQ6PCfhfWzYqmKNiCVHheIX9v6UjOZ3BGOkU/s1600/fuzz%2521.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjoGyDF1SbtvOO03_6NdMOm6tzhd80cZ0cftt4vDXfqnmYOrgyJ8oYMRt0iXSj4dJbcoeseANODukojm9ImWEnlg-5G-ExM5OgyQ6PCfhfWzYqmKNiCVHheIX9v6UjOZ3BGOkU/s640/fuzz%2521.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Fuzz everywhere! I actually cleaned my machine about a week ago, and I use a really high quality, low lint thread. It's surprising how all that lint builds up.<br />
<br />
Grab some q-tips and carefully swipe them all around. The lint sticks to them really well!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaY_u0GgXRA8Q2m7d-cfqNdN5xZhp7n434LPMjzVODmpN2ov4F06j7mCsNlYK2oqlGVz2Yjtc2gvzXXwKv3EKCrCnAO4Aotq4T1fX31WrJ2dfUxsBhTn0PsP2_OiB2GNwAMgA/s1600/qtips.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaY_u0GgXRA8Q2m7d-cfqNdN5xZhp7n434LPMjzVODmpN2ov4F06j7mCsNlYK2oqlGVz2Yjtc2gvzXXwKv3EKCrCnAO4Aotq4T1fX31WrJ2dfUxsBhTn0PsP2_OiB2GNwAMgA/s640/qtips.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Things are so much nicer!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUSyec4SLaW6TLahEynS0h3DbmZTmkA8uoH43qzFABAK0OTMOo3P0KdJWkOIZdEFPugg6BoOt-McEP0YrPmxmFr-T92nh0I0JmbEMyifhOdejWLOeZEQVbRphURUkbHF9j-14/s1600/after+swab.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgUSyec4SLaW6TLahEynS0h3DbmZTmkA8uoH43qzFABAK0OTMOo3P0KdJWkOIZdEFPugg6BoOt-McEP0YrPmxmFr-T92nh0I0JmbEMyifhOdejWLOeZEQVbRphURUkbHF9j-14/s640/after+swab.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
Now you carefully put your bobbin case back in. There is probably a little arrow on the machine that lines up with the case like I have here. But it won't fit in backwards, and sit nice and flat. <br />
<br />
Turn the hand wheel a few times toward you to see it all move smoothly before you put the plate back on. <br />
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">before clean, but good shot of the arrows...</td></tr>

<br />
Get everything put back together, thread it up, and take a run of test stitches. You're ready to sew!<br />
<br />

<br />
When it's time to wash your masks - what to do?!<br />
<br />
All the masks I make are 100% cotton that I have pre-washed in hot.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG1XO0gf2owXq-MaO85IIy8YBpozrP5qUeGuo02JgRFhnqnELexkwdIT7TpQ8vc0CkFe2HZ05hTikgSUVZCIBMX6z0knDa0waBZH4GZkHinWoXPpnj83zLIM5XvEcxUP0RXCU/s1600/Bubbles.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG1XO0gf2owXq-MaO85IIy8YBpozrP5qUeGuo02JgRFhnqnELexkwdIT7TpQ8vc0CkFe2HZ05hTikgSUVZCIBMX6z0knDa0waBZH4GZkHinWoXPpnj83zLIM5XvEcxUP0RXCU/s640/Bubbles.PNG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
After I'm done running around and ready to take off my mask, I carefully remove it and place in a fabric bag for washing. Lace used to tie, included. (If you've used a wire for your nose, don't put that through the washing machine. It might rust or poke holes in stuff.)<br />
<br />
Then I just toss the bag, with the mask inside, into the washing machine with a load of towels. I wash those all in hot. <br />
<br />
If I don't have a load ready and I want to wash a mask, hot water and some tide or dawn dish soap in a big bowl works just as well. I scrub it and let it soak for a bit before rinsing well.<br />
<br />
When the wash cycle is done, you can either let your mask air dry or shift it into the dryer with the rest of the load. As a test, I pulled one mask from my bag to let air dry overnight. The others went through the dryer cycle.<br />
<br />
The next morning, my airdry mask was pretty well dry, and looking nice. I dumped the bag of dryer-cycle masks out next to it. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipjFmc_Szd_ByrvljGXgWPbvvJwJVfBoO3WC5P4-4yHQwgg_zbsubBuwXOU7Jpw4nBfwGhyDw6z6Wn958GD2lwAM6VvE_4_9Q9URUWBoH2uYPdttN70R1EfssIuTg08B7Pmpw/s1600/Washed.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEipjFmc_Szd_ByrvljGXgWPbvvJwJVfBoO3WC5P4-4yHQwgg_zbsubBuwXOU7Jpw4nBfwGhyDw6z6Wn958GD2lwAM6VvE_4_9Q9URUWBoH2uYPdttN70R1EfssIuTg08B7Pmpw/s640/Washed.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Bwahaha. Poor little crumpled masks. But not to worry!<br />
<br />
I'm not one to iron anything other than my in-process fabric. But a quick press of the masks made them ready to wear again. Hurray.<br />
<br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">I tried sewing and wearing at least seven different patterns, between the pleated and clamshell types. <span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">This is the one I make. It is a super awesome pattern by CraftPassion, with excellent instructions. In her video, she starts with a little clip of how to put it on with the laces. Makes it super comfortable to wear!</span><br />

<span style="font-family: "helvetica neue" , "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">When you use the shoe lace to tie, double knot at the back. Mine came loose after wearing out shopping for a couple hours. It’s very comfortable with the tie, but a little more hot. If you are good with a looser fit, wearing with the ear loops is very comfortable. They also work for short runs out if you don't want the ties around your hair. But then you’ll need to use a safety pin to thread the laces back through next time you want them. </span><br />

Finally getting the chance to sew a little more! But the time is short, and I'm still fairly tired when I'm at it, so I've been working on clothing for Mara. It's nice to have a specific pattern to follow sometimes.<br />
<br />
I would love to sew up most of her tops for layering this fall and winter.<br />
<br />

A couple weeks ago I came across a few online pattern companies with super cute little girl clothes. This first one is called <a href="http://littlelizardking.com/">Little Lizard King</a>, and the adorable top is named <a href="http://littlelizardking.com/shirts-tops/89-fly-girl.html">Fly Girl</a>. From a couple outfits I already had, I knew the flutter sleeves were cute on Mara. And this pattern is awesome for quilters! I have So. Much. fabric, but its all in smaller quilting amounts. This bodice top and sleeve take almost nothing, and the bottom part of the shirt is relatively narrow and only cut wof for the smaller sizes. See, I even used a bit of my hoarded oranges!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjR0A5MBuHhu3_hNoT9i1uQbs4qnlBdw8dQg1kKJfgv_1bHrqGI6Th0VSL_41DEMz2OpHWQEqA_ZUFjbKauaURBJ8HTFZB9xaJmRmTEU093AU6EUH43Fcgt1muIfNcet3gkbK4/s1600/IMG_0465.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjR0A5MBuHhu3_hNoT9i1uQbs4qnlBdw8dQg1kKJfgv_1bHrqGI6Th0VSL_41DEMz2OpHWQEqA_ZUFjbKauaURBJ8HTFZB9xaJmRmTEU093AU6EUH43Fcgt1muIfNcet3gkbK4/s1600/IMG_0465.JPG" height="640" width="469" /></a></div><br />
The only thing I wasn't fond of when making the top, was the huge amount of bulk inside the bodice - the top stitching was kind of a bear, trying to keep it nice and even. Since I'm not selling the tops, and nobody but Mara and I will see the inside finishes, I'll probably skip a couple folds next time. Although the finishes are super beautiful and professional looking, a simple serged edge will keep the fraying away and reduce some bulk.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4FEM-Q3VO6xbfkZoEYiSk8YLdyKHMM9MmTAs3VbXlfGEmU4W2NVlCqlh5e0juDySKDUajh8gKBv1DVat8536M5qDJQtepBsio-bsLH4oMl7nk7xrVd7pxvuuNzZps4e35fHw/s1600/IMG_0464.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4FEM-Q3VO6xbfkZoEYiSk8YLdyKHMM9MmTAs3VbXlfGEmU4W2NVlCqlh5e0juDySKDUajh8gKBv1DVat8536M5qDJQtepBsio-bsLH4oMl7nk7xrVd7pxvuuNzZps4e35fHw/s1600/IMG_0464.JPG" height="640" width="469" /></a></div><br />
My next try at the top was in all knits! The thing I have the most trouble with for knit is to get a nice collar or arm... and the way this pattern is constructed, neither of those things are included. Hurrah.<br />
<br />
And. Well. BACON.<br />
<br />
I made a few changes to go this with knit. The first being eliminating the back cut and snap. It seemed like there was plenty of room to get the top over her head, so I went for a single piece instead of two. Fit was perfect! I'm considering doing the same thing for a woven, but I do like how neatly the split and buttoned back lays and moves. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhum9PPnsIpV_JN40OuOqMIk29OuET30mBvw4kUo8XZJ4fgItkS7reNwb4E-dkfj0a50W0orfzjxh4Oe3amWKxJvQ1lkVknRthX30tbPv4Ewm2iGRD0c0hMzesZAGuxsn_R5cM/s1600/IMG_0463.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhum9PPnsIpV_JN40OuOqMIk29OuET30mBvw4kUo8XZJ4fgItkS7reNwb4E-dkfj0a50W0orfzjxh4Oe3amWKxJvQ1lkVknRthX30tbPv4Ewm2iGRD0c0hMzesZAGuxsn_R5cM/s1600/IMG_0463.JPG" height="640" width="469" /></a></div><br />
This little top is adorable. And in the knit, it makes for wonderful play wear.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNrsfOJy4Rt96Y35rUwANQeYE1-k2UaNQo45Z7SSd24GNohmAgaz_riRyFSU8wloNgRyP3gED5_ccaV6p_JWndzpWLBJ4vNbSwp_Ohs3aTGzauvHB4x86dNIiW_6_MIUHH9EA/s1600/IMG_0462.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhNrsfOJy4Rt96Y35rUwANQeYE1-k2UaNQo45Z7SSd24GNohmAgaz_riRyFSU8wloNgRyP3gED5_ccaV6p_JWndzpWLBJ4vNbSwp_Ohs3aTGzauvHB4x86dNIiW_6_MIUHH9EA/s1600/IMG_0462.JPG" height="640" width="433" /></a></div><br />
Especailly hunting birds and bugs. I changed up the pattern directions for the arm holes, as the woven calls for a small bit of bias that beautifully covers and turns.... lazy, I didn't want to make any knit bias tape. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV-vRkMIJpZyjwxObQJIlBYY5aNGqRH9CyxuKWuz8dkILk3I7QT4Ng8746bNBvF__pfJxF6qmsTdI6jkA5Etjgq9RqkfAWRfiHmcGd9rrMHjByJBAYrGX9GCmFa5qQsstCmzs/s1600/IMG_0461.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjV-vRkMIJpZyjwxObQJIlBYY5aNGqRH9CyxuKWuz8dkILk3I7QT4Ng8746bNBvF__pfJxF6qmsTdI6jkA5Etjgq9RqkfAWRfiHmcGd9rrMHjByJBAYrGX9GCmFa5qQsstCmzs/s1600/IMG_0461.JPG" height="478" width="640" /></a></div><br />
You can see that the knit fabric under her arms also lays very nicely, and I think that is partly due to a cool trick I came across. <br />
<br />
You use this clear elastic. Pull out a piece and give it a good stretch, like youre blowing up a balloon. Then, lay it under the folded seam. Top stitch, going through the sandwiched elastic. That elastic keeps your stitches smooth and beautiful, and the folded edge nice and stable. A very cool trick!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFushfCDidLudJhqmKQ88Z63TOkemkh9dal18_-MAEMxx5Z0_lfIlDOdVquROOWnmkxoO-FnqKKQg8zPU9upgV_50FEKuWgHjDL4F9cgPq-OEstlvRrmFreQeJHKQj1q-QkeI/s1600/IMG_0459.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhFushfCDidLudJhqmKQ88Z63TOkemkh9dal18_-MAEMxx5Z0_lfIlDOdVquROOWnmkxoO-FnqKKQg8zPU9upgV_50FEKuWgHjDL4F9cgPq-OEstlvRrmFreQeJHKQj1q-QkeI/s1600/IMG_0459.JPG" height="478" width="640" /></a></div><br />
The one other thing I changed was on the sleeves. If you can see at the top, the flutter sleeves are beautiful, with a contrast lining. Again, not worried about fraying, I went with only one layer of sleeve fabric. I turned down the top edge the needed amount for adding elastic to make a casing, and that's it. I considered doing a rolled edge finish, but I don't have thread that matches well enough. I think it was fine to skip.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0fn-8xL72qnUu4nimtQMuAnk6pS_WHmyRvDlN5g7jJbctrWRrwsPQHd7VS5di_XPP-YyHggHGKtFQrmXhyphenhyphenEeqvVowyUGyCdaGQ8tjCt3U7_rkpIZCwEtaPEW5plI6rkbAtxM/s1600/IMG_0456.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj0fn-8xL72qnUu4nimtQMuAnk6pS_WHmyRvDlN5g7jJbctrWRrwsPQHd7VS5di_XPP-YyHggHGKtFQrmXhyphenhyphenEeqvVowyUGyCdaGQ8tjCt3U7_rkpIZCwEtaPEW5plI6rkbAtxM/s1600/IMG_0456.JPG" height="478" width="640" /></a></div><br />
So, that's it with the Fly Girl. I have plans on making one fore October with some of my hoarded Ghastly prints. I think it will be super cute. <br />
<br />
And, totally rationalizing here, I figure I can hack up her dresses once she grows out of them to get back some of my quilting fabric. Ha! <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsDW1vvE5vjsFD_Gr2cmbYGc4zLpKfNHfMBN8IqG5GVJdCh_7isHjrkgzqXXGnuXnLx_IfsfDTkzckPQ8oGBvC4vphYfsuW51Y_e_DxjsWa3esUNXvjfzBzSho-ElC9bfXkiI/s1600/IMG_0418.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsDW1vvE5vjsFD_Gr2cmbYGc4zLpKfNHfMBN8IqG5GVJdCh_7isHjrkgzqXXGnuXnLx_IfsfDTkzckPQ8oGBvC4vphYfsuW51Y_e_DxjsWa3esUNXvjfzBzSho-ElC9bfXkiI/s1600/IMG_0418.JPG" height="640" width="478" /></a></div><br />
Peeks at a couple more things I've finished. That cute little dress above is the <a href="http://littlelizardking.com/shirts-tops/99-blue-ribbon-winner.html">Blue Ribbon Winner</a> dress, also from Little Lizard King. That's a cool pattern that has info for doing either flutter, short or long sleeve knit tops, then a knit or woven middle sash, and a ruffled woven bottom. I love that they include a cut point for upcycling a store bought shirt. This is a knit top I got from Target - elminating once again my need to sew up a knit collar or arm. I'll have to takle that some day.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitibtLmUw6VBE_hc0UivYUY2wBdZIiTj4AgUntZy6Ha6YSt579bYmBZhyhzMoCfZiydrn4Mx4m2G85rnsUTx3EIISomZX5rOmuQOMNlJMxyorcWGWnLsGfIYazk09IhIGTpo8/s1600/IMG_0432.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitibtLmUw6VBE_hc0UivYUY2wBdZIiTj4AgUntZy6Ha6YSt579bYmBZhyhzMoCfZiydrn4Mx4m2G85rnsUTx3EIISomZX5rOmuQOMNlJMxyorcWGWnLsGfIYazk09IhIGTpo8/s1600/IMG_0432.JPG" height="640" width="478" /></a></div><br />
Finally, <a href="https://www.etsy.com/listing/197094090/salebuy-2-get-1-freestrawberry-fields?ref=shop_home_feat_2">Strawberry Fields</a> knit triple ruffle shorts/capri/pants pattern from FooFooThreads. They are sooooo cute! And the fit is amazing. There is a mod within the pattern for adjusting rise, which was perfect for covering little miss's fluffy cloth diaper bottom.<br />
<br />
(Full on girl mom now - surrounded by fluffy, ruffly sewing and I turned on the Frozen iTunes station the other day. Super girly fun!) Angela Nashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08264664659789446452noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31805894.post-88175014653002277182014-06-21T23:13:00.001-05:002014-06-21T23:13:35.801-05:00Mara's First BirthdayJune 20, 2014<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14497298263" title="The Angel and her Bunting by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="The Angel and her Bunting" height="562" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5154/14497298263_f1bfc83d4c_b.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
We had the most wonderful day for Mara's first Birthday. It was simple and filled with beautiful things.<br />
<br />
And because I think she's the cutest thing ever, I have a crazy number of photos to share :)<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14290529999" title="First Birthday Dress by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="First Birthday Dress" height="640" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3908/14290529999_bbed28c7da_b.jpg" width="428" /></a><br />
<br />
Mara wore the Geranium dress I made for her birthday. <br />
<br />
I used Joel Dewberry voile, and it was beautiful. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14477159935" title="Story by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="Story" height="640" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3873/14477159935_0256fa69ef_b.jpg" width="459" /></a><br />
<br />
We were trying to get some pictures of her with the balloons and big number One, but she just wanted to read stories. She loves books. (shhh, don't tell her the birthday crown is on. It took just a couple distractions and she wore it around for a long time!)<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14497295603" title="Classic Mara face by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="Classic Mara face" height="640" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5476/14497295603_63d769c9e2_b.jpg" width="457" /></a><br />
<br />
Classic Mara face, so glad we caught it. <br />
<br />
It shows up whenever an interesting sound pops up in her world.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14290579328" title="Max! by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="Max!" height="640" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5588/14290579328_0d863af00c_b.jpg" width="400" /></a> <br />
<br />
Then we heard Grandma and Popa pull into the driveway, so we ran to the front door. Grandma had put a fun collection of things in an open fabric basket for Mara's gift, and a little stuffed puppy was peaking out. Mara is crazy about animals right now, especially birds and dogs. She saw that puppy through the front window and had to grab it as soon as it was within reach.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14475872892" title="Crazy Girl Ride by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="Crazy Girl Ride" height="640" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3851/14475872892_e760d84671_b.jpg" width="469" /></a><br />
<br />
Another classic Mara face - she's a little bit of a wild child, and loves crazy fun.<br />
<br />
Kenton gave her a birthday ride, until he was pooped. She wasn't done riding, but I don't think anybody would last long enough for her.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14477169385" title="Beautiful Play Silk by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="Beautiful Play Silk" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2898/14477169385_4344c1166f_b.jpg" width="492" /></a><br />
<br />
With just my mom and dad over - and gifts sent from Aunt Laura and Uncle Chris - Mara had a fun time enjoying each new treasure as she opened them.<br />
<br />
Becket and I dyed 8 squares and one long silk scarf. The Dharma acid dye is fabulous. Such saturated colors!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14476087972" title="playsilks by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="playsilks" height="478" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3866/14476087972_7a9879b95b_b.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
And Mara loved them.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14454070506" title="Silly Silk! by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="Silly Silk!" height="590" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3870/14454070506_0f03fc3e58_b.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
With my little bit of Waldrof theme going, Mara also got her first <a href="http://bamboletta.com/">Bamboletta</a> doll.<br />
<br />
She is just as beautiful and amazingly crafted as I imagined. I would love to get back to the Vancouver area and visit them some day. They just started having a day long retreat where they supply you with doll parts and you get to chat and sew. How fun would that be?!<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14454072266" title="Ruby - Bamboletta Baby by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="Ruby - Bamboletta Baby" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2920/14454072266_26596c10e2_b.jpg" width="619" /></a><br />
<br />
Aunt Laura, a lover of music, sent a wonderful collection of toddler instruments. The sound of each is wonderful, and the tone on these notes is just beautiful. Mara was so pround of her music.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14475879042" title="Music! by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="Music!" height="640" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3897/14475879042_d0942ef296_b.jpg" width="490" /></a><br />
<br />
My mom found the most perfect dog book! Real dog photos, in a child's interactive story book.<br />
<br />
At this point, Mara had wandered back over to her balloons, and ended up with them between her legs. She just happily continued on with the balloons trailing all around her. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14290564040" title="Dog Book! by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="Dog Book!" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2897/14290564040_75ed3328f3_b.jpg" width="427" /></a><br />
<br />
She LOVES dogs. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14290592428" title="I L.O.V.E. Dogs! by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="I L.O.V.E. Dogs!" height="640" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5480/14290592428_4a3e686db6_b.jpg" width="630" /></a><br />
<br />
Really.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14477178995" title="Love by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="Love" height="427" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3892/14477178995_c9076041be_b.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />

<br />
Mara was also pretty happy being sung to - as opposed to Becket, poor little guy cried anytime people looked at him for more than a couple seconds.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14475887392" title="See - Good! by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="See - Good!" height="570" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5313/14475887392_c0c284fb75_b.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Hey, have you seen this cake stuff before?<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14290568770" title="Cake - Yum! by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="Cake - Yum!" height="630" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3889/14290568770_e0bf9aa4e8_b.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Because I think it's really good.<br />
<br />
We all had such a fun time watching Mara enjoy her special day. The group shot even went well! Not the best frame of Mara, but we all look good, and she has just a few photos already.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14290859007" title="family by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="family" height="455" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2928/14290859007_47c00d89a7_b.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
Mara got to end her day being crazy with Becket, and walking through puddles in her new flip flops. Some of her favorite things to do.<br />
<br />
Being One is Wonderful.<br />

<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14354707225" title="Untitled by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="Untitled" height="640" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3889/14354707225_d5646f0de8_b.jpg" width="478" /></a><br />
<br />
It has been a busy year with three boys and now this little girl. Lacrosse championships have been won for the high school guys. (I need to figure out how to post from my ipad, along with photos. Since I LIVE on my ipad.)<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14376493133" title="lax cup by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="lax cup" height="640" src="https://farm3.staticflickr.com/2940/14376493133_dedffa093b_b.jpg" width="469" /></a><br />
<br />
I've done a decent amount of sewing, but all of it baby or clothing items. Most recently, I made a tester Geranium dress, by Made By Rae. I plan on making it for her first birthday, but wanted to try out the fit before using my Joel Dewberry voile. So, I found this lovely cotton lawn, way marked down - only $4 for the yard. The boys say she looks like a picnic blanket. Ha! But I love it.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14374766313" title="Perfect fit! by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="Perfect fit!" height="478" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3908/14374766313_da7f6df27a_k.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
I finished it up during a rare nap, and did a happy dance when I put it on her. The fit is amazing. I made the 12-18 month size, hoping it would fit for the summer. I did cap sleeves on top, and the gathered skirt - without pockets - for the bottom. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14168001998" title="Untitled by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="Untitled" height="640" src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5273/14168001998_cd122042d8_k.jpg" width="478" /></a><br />
<br />
I L.O.V.E. my KAM snaps. They were put in place of making button holes. I think they work well for the little ones, especially since she's in a car seat half her days! Brothers have lots of activities. <br />
<br />
(Side note - she's been walking since 10 months o.O things are crazy around here)<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/14351285131" title="Untitled by Angela, on Flickr"><img alt="Untitled" height="640" src="https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3899/14351285131_1be322c870_b.jpg" width="478" /></a><br />
<br />
That neck line cut out is so sweet. And I was super impressed with how well it turned and lies. My only addition was that blue trim. Oh, and made the top half on the bias to take advantage of the pretty gingham pattern.<br />
<br />
I've made a few of Rae's patterns, and they are always wonderful. But I am super in love with this Geranium dress. So excited I have a little girl to sew for!Angela Nashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08264664659789446452noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31805894.post-58134345761340560542013-07-22T15:58:00.001-05:002013-07-22T15:58:15.352-05:00One MonthWow, that was fast.<br />

Thought it would be fun to do one every month in this diaper to see how big she gets!<br />

Her coming home outfit. I knit the hat, made Rae's wonderful <a href="http://www.made-by-rae.com/2009/08/itty-bitty-dress-for-clementine/">little dress</a>, and a voile quilt. It was super strange to bring a baby home in a dress.<br />

<br />
There is no way I'm going to find time to sit and blog them all - but I want to get them up before I lose track of details. If you want any extra info on anything, I have some info in the flickr links. And feel free to ask questions.<br />
<br />
All my bloggy friends out there - I haven't been reading for at least the past month. So forgive me for not commenting on all the cool things I'm sure you're doing.<br />
<br />
Some super fun tea and chocolate holders I made for the hostesses of my showers - and a couple more were made for teacher gifts:<br />

<br />
Any guesses as to what my new obsession has been over the past week?!<br />
<br />Angela Nashhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08264664659789446452noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31805894.post-65443313178444620182013-05-07T13:12:00.001-05:002013-05-07T13:12:55.108-05:00OH - Oh - Oh! Vintage!What is softer, and cooler on baby skin than vintage?! <br />
<br />
I'm actually going to use a few of my favorite vintage FQs from swaps for the back of the baby quilt. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/mymetier/8717298231/" title="vintage by banquopack, on Flickr"><img alt="vintage" height="467" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7346/8717298231_66ec8fae9e_b.jpg" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
But it's only about 37x43.<br />
<br />
...rummage - rummage - rummage.....how to choose!?<br />

<br />
There has been a lot of this going on.....all three boys moved bedrooms.....much cleaning and painting, getting things ready for the baby.<br />
<br />
(Becket was super excited to help paint his new room. Being unable to hand over control of stuff, I didn't want him to REALLY paint the wall. So I gave him a small trim roller for his paint. He worked happily away for a long time, then we re-coated the area for a solid look later.)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhctW8eNilLDqKUVW49axKO1IUR6E0ybPUrnASRT-VZyP0NxzH0jmYq7vj98bDLMZB0ZC049OIN128D2H6aEr7QlR1UYb3VQ_yWqGVm4bVYdwBO72vuSpjmJXqwBHS0NLuHl_k/s1600/becket+paint.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="425" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhctW8eNilLDqKUVW49axKO1IUR6E0ybPUrnASRT-VZyP0NxzH0jmYq7vj98bDLMZB0ZC049OIN128D2H6aEr7QlR1UYb3VQ_yWqGVm4bVYdwBO72vuSpjmJXqwBHS0NLuHl_k/s640/becket+paint.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I've actually done a decent amount of quilt and baby sewing as well. Just haven't had the time to photo and post them yet. <br />
<br />
But, I got an email asking about how I squared up my large, purple quilt blocks - they were larger than my biggest square ruler. I already had several pictures on my computer, and have ditched the photoshop editing part of my process in the interest of actually getting this posted!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZNPL9U9XGZtNu4MRPRD4Slklj-XBKzgQlt77iYPia5N25g0h4sPnXjrrN9DXy4zaFn3J2HIOz6Kq9u76UDvkZjkr11AOp64xNpQJCURfAehPqB5khTyT17OeANxMJYddDqEk/s1600/IMG_1417.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZNPL9U9XGZtNu4MRPRD4Slklj-XBKzgQlt77iYPia5N25g0h4sPnXjrrN9DXy4zaFn3J2HIOz6Kq9u76UDvkZjkr11AOp64xNpQJCURfAehPqB5khTyT17OeANxMJYddDqEk/s640/IMG_1417.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
The challenge here is a block that needs to be 24.5" square, my largest square ruler being 16.5".<br />
<br />
Also, for the finished quilt to look just right, the white sashing needed to be perfectly centered in both directions.<br />
<br />
To get all this done, I used a largish square ruler, my cutting mat, and a couple other 26"+ long, narrow rulers.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNfu1bSN-Jow1vdm3GW52bMBdnKakUd4p18GTEyCy9ZHo6c3-lTKxJ1Lm19Q2VMjWiHt3rufKrR5hCw4YxXfxL9JZzC1fMG8qYq4LX9GPvRZa0O9XRrziVNXIS4foun7eIwho/s1600/IMG_1420.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjNfu1bSN-Jow1vdm3GW52bMBdnKakUd4p18GTEyCy9ZHo6c3-lTKxJ1Lm19Q2VMjWiHt3rufKrR5hCw4YxXfxL9JZzC1fMG8qYq4LX9GPvRZa0O9XRrziVNXIS4foun7eIwho/s640/IMG_1420.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Start by marking what you want to be the center, on one of the block's edges. <br />
<br />
You can see here that I used my Frixion pen. Ironically, the email I got asking about how I accomplished this squaring up was asked by a quilter that had originally found my blog as she searched for information about the <a href="http://mythreesonsknit.blogspot.com/2012/05/pilot-frixion-pen-sewers-warning.html">Frixion pen</a>! This is one of the two ways I actually DO use it on my fabrics. All the marks are in the seam allowance, or trimmed away.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibDPJVWlc-Bep8YWDAvt1ocCURGobGZxv-EbZuOn5_oqClWRMPQeqdS5y883Nq4p4qY2VzEFtuI744cbIa5hStfL1NDPThNfH7EZnBdnWh48zpVFJWVwmeQOvzvDoc-h00368/s1600/IMG_1422.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibDPJVWlc-Bep8YWDAvt1ocCURGobGZxv-EbZuOn5_oqClWRMPQeqdS5y883Nq4p4qY2VzEFtuI744cbIa5hStfL1NDPThNfH7EZnBdnWh48zpVFJWVwmeQOvzvDoc-h00368/s640/IMG_1422.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
My block needed to be 24.5" square, so I needed to measure OUT FROM this center point, half the size of my block - which is 12.25". <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5RlgCSbzzZBAqNcvLNAAi3uRREIDzTzgEfwrgkit4l9Sf0zmVyOipeBCa3ATyW2t_9kp3RVLzOiN0r6CfXYddLYuCJ0MN7ZSeBlMaFaMnMbWowpx8f_xLKX4CHsbVGJFoJfE/s1600/IMG_1424.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5RlgCSbzzZBAqNcvLNAAi3uRREIDzTzgEfwrgkit4l9Sf0zmVyOipeBCa3ATyW2t_9kp3RVLzOiN0r6CfXYddLYuCJ0MN7ZSeBlMaFaMnMbWowpx8f_xLKX4CHsbVGJFoJfE/s640/IMG_1424.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
Please ignore the next two photos that need to rotate. Part of the annoying blogger thing and how it randomly deals with unedited pictures.<br />
<br />
I have my ruler lined up so that the 12.25 mark is at the center point of the block. ALSO the vertical and horizontal are both aligned squarely.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4soaMj60BuFyJ-PdeiQhu2giVOrhYlHImf5sSScVYg8GJqlNXxABZkaehyphenhyphenHPbwoC1R2vhGl2bwmYv-LIkBS_KT5lOaFDkjpVUdRNFi_9mKmdjsDjOl0LJsSSKgrpzjwvPtRk/s1600/IMG_1425.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4soaMj60BuFyJ-PdeiQhu2giVOrhYlHImf5sSScVYg8GJqlNXxABZkaehyphenhyphenHPbwoC1R2vhGl2bwmYv-LIkBS_KT5lOaFDkjpVUdRNFi_9mKmdjsDjOl0LJsSSKgrpzjwvPtRk/s640/IMG_1425.JPG" width="426" /></a></div>
<br />
Better view in that picture above - What is important is that those parts of the block are as near perfect in both directions. That way the finished design looks like a square, and not a wacky, slanting rhombus or something.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaIhyphenhyphene9Vgqp-lybjeZkJLBPFHDkSO2AZviSmRR8UctAXdt_hx4dNLSacZSjxizLQqMby3POUlfj3moJyicangx43mqtlmik9ZPY9hc0mHmfKvIdwkIwYYuGaMym08I9P5pKlo/s1600/IMG_1427.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiaIhyphenhyphene9Vgqp-lybjeZkJLBPFHDkSO2AZviSmRR8UctAXdt_hx4dNLSacZSjxizLQqMby3POUlfj3moJyicangx43mqtlmik9ZPY9hc0mHmfKvIdwkIwYYuGaMym08I9P5pKlo/s640/IMG_1427.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Now, the tricky part. <br />
<br />
Especially for those of us who are cursed with slipping ruler syndrome.<br />
<br />
Hold your big square, and carefully slide a long ruler up against it, without shifting anything. I would re-check the 12.25" mark and the squareness of that yellow ruler after getting the long ruler in place. <br />
<br />
Oh, must be noted, I am right handed. And I am totlaly unable to cut with my left. <br />
<br />
If you can cut with your left, remove the first ruler (the square yellow one, in my case), hold the long ruler in place, and trim your block.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhViPYSl3YTcss7asVpxG64KlXWpBSAocD7WwlnIOvVtJO2m1vx-mC25weKUTARWNbMfWIU-KAvKo79W4l9Jj37MjIjW3JLIuxD0IPSXzTpSlw38NKn6tMqoqPdOq8k25mg4Es/s1600/IMG_1429.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhViPYSl3YTcss7asVpxG64KlXWpBSAocD7WwlnIOvVtJO2m1vx-mC25weKUTARWNbMfWIU-KAvKo79W4l9Jj37MjIjW3JLIuxD0IPSXzTpSlw38NKn6tMqoqPdOq8k25mg4Es/s640/IMG_1429.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
For myself, I carefully moved away the square, replaced it with yet another 26"+ long ruler - moved that second one out of the way - and then trimmed my block. <br />
<br />
Did you get that? It's a bit of swapping back and forth, and I'm lucky to have a big stack of rulers. <br />
<br />
Those steps take the longest. The point of them being getting yourself a starting point that puts the center exactly in the middle and the first edge perfectly square with your piecing.<br />
<br />
Let's get the last three sides done.....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiKtzzTUfdZpAc-phgQnef_Msohl-PwnL6cfs5NpKEWAoMkII9Z1dkqp7NzLa8LYor1mT83xrq1ohrBgrr-Y_4DTSudUDIc1AndXZ-GPtZKEkVK7xw2Ia4MTb7mfaT6PzrXIc/s1600/IMG_1430.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgiKtzzTUfdZpAc-phgQnef_Msohl-PwnL6cfs5NpKEWAoMkII9Z1dkqp7NzLa8LYor1mT83xrq1ohrBgrr-Y_4DTSudUDIc1AndXZ-GPtZKEkVK7xw2Ia4MTb7mfaT6PzrXIc/s640/IMG_1430.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
Using your cutting mat, line the nice edge you just made up with one of the ruled markings. <br />
<br />
Check that it's nice and straight, top to bottom. <br />

Count over to the other side, the full width of your finished block. <br />
<br />
I had to go over 24.5"<br />
<br />
Use a long ruler and the markings on your mat to perfectly cut the block, ending up with one set of perfectly parallel sides.<br />

...Ugh, another sideways photo..... <br />
<br />
Anyway, we are going to do the process again, for the last two sides. WITH ONE DIFFERENCE.<br />
<br />
After you mark the center of the sashing, you need to measure over that same half distance as before. 12.25" in my case. <br />
<br />
INSTEAD of lining up your square ruler with the block piecing, you now line it up with one of the two sides we already cut. I used two large squares to double check I was in exact center, because I'm Type A like that. Do not freak out if your outside edge alignment and the block piecing alignment are just a bit off. For me, an 1/8" drift was not visually obvious in the end. I did have one mess of a block, I have no idea what I was doing as I pieced. The sashing angled nearly 3/8" off center from side to side. I re-made that block.<br />
<br />
After you trim this third side, line it up on your cutting mat again and measure over the full block width for your last cut.<br />

<br />
Ta-Da! Perfectly square and centered, huge quilt block.<br />
<br />
I'm thinking this all will make more sense if you are reading and cutting at the same time. It's a bunch of shifting and rulers. But I hope it helps!<br />
<br />
Ask away with questions on any horribly confusing stuff, and I'll try to make things clear.<br />
