It's May Giveaway Day!

Welcome all for May Giveaway Day!

I must say I have an ulterior motive here. You know how newlyweds are so happy and they want everybody else married too. I'm having so much fun with my new obsession, that I want you addicted also! So, I have a couple of things for you.

It started innocently enough - I need some kind of handwork to keep me sane on an upcoming airline flight. There so many cute hexagon projects popping up lately, I had to give it a try.

And of course I found that it's the perfect little handwork to fill in for the carry-along I miss now that I don't knit much anymore!

With some of my first hexagons, I've made you a Lunchmate. Perfect little thing now that picnic weather is near. Open and unroll for a nice, clean spot when you're eating outside! Picnic tables can be a bit gross especially if you find a nice one under a pretty tree where birds may sit.

Leslie, at Fluff & Nonsense, made up the Lunchmate as a gift for her mom. And I thought it was awesome! I asked Leslie if it would be ok for me to copy the design for this little giveaway. She so kindly said yes, and then sent me the construction notes she had made for herself. Thank you Leslie! I put linen for the inside with the hexagons, and that yummy orange dot for the outside. Totally washable.

I also want you to give hexagons a try yourself. I made a little starter package (or add-on package if you're already addicted).

A packet of 25 card stock templates in the 1" size, and a nice stack of 70 modern 2.5" fabric squares.

To enter, please give me at least one idea to entertain a child on a long airplane flight. I want to work on my hexagons and not just entertain the 4, 11, and 13yr olds!

One person will win both of these prizes. I'm in Chicagoland and will ship internationally, but you need to have an email linked to your comment in some way so I can get a hold of you! I'll pick a winner on Thursday night - Good Luck!

Make a little bag of treats wrap each on individually. Write out a detailed instruction sheet telling them they can open them at 30 minute intervals. Puzzle books, Cats in the Cradle instructions, a sweet treat, Origami or paper airplane instructions printed from online sites and a stack of paper, are a few good ideas.

A package of pipe cleaners. Fun for building, twisting, curling, etc. They were my sons favorite activity on our 18 drive to Florida this year. He had a system of cranes built on the back of his sister's seat - hmmm, maybe not so great for plane trips -lol! Aqua doodle was high on the list too. :)

Love this! Try making airplane bingo cards for them, with different common items found on a plane, or items that other passengers might be wearing.

I've never flown with a child (the last time was when my oldest was 6 months old...now he's 3 1/2!)...I think bring books, art, puzzles (words, numbers, riddle, brain puzzles), make them some pillows in case they just want to sleep.
thanks for the giveaway

we always brought books with us... crosswords... a thin pack of colored pencils and a stack of white paper...

the older one shsould be perfectly capable of entertaining themselves, but the younger ones could... write a story together and illustrate it... learn a few card games... etc. little, light things that take a long time.

thanks for making giveaway day as awesome as it is!
cheers,
sarita

I don't have any kids myself but my little brother spends hours on his gameboy. If they have more than one game, they aren't likely to get bored. Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

Those are beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing with us. Books always worked for me and my little one, but one good tip is to dole out the fun things you do have a bit at a time, so you always have something new to distract them with. Good luck and I hope you get some sewing time on the trip.

Lovely give away.

Oooh how gorgeous! For long trips you cannot beat Nintendo DSi's, or MP3 players, or even a good book (my 9yr old son will sit reading Harry Potter for hours). But most important take as much food as you can carry, kids are always hungry especially when they are bored!

That is beautiful and I have been wanting to try hexagons! I have a flight, with layover, from Boston to Idaho coming up. With my one year old. Without my husband! I need help too and will read your comments :) My tip, for the younger set - sticky notes. Put sticky notes on seat in front of you and the babes will enjoy peeling them on and off and on and off. I just have the one babe so that is my only tip...

Last time I did a plane ride it was with 3 children, 1 of which was still in a diaper. NOT fun. This was also before hand-held video games and dvd players were affordable.
So I'd def. go with those two. What did I do?
I had in various sized packages:
~crayons
~construction paper
~coloring books
~sculpey clay (less likely to make huge mess - kids like permanency)
~felt and fat/non sharp kid needles with embroidery thread
~lots and lots of snacks
~books
~brand new never seen tiny toys (fairy's and polly pockets for girls, army men and dinos for boys)for bribing them when they get really bad
~small pillows and blankets for *hopefully* napping
~mp3 player, songs they like, and headphones

this is lovely! i didn't realize hexes were so portable -- i love hand sewing and think i may need to give these a try. thanks for the inspiration! i don't have kids myself, but a trick my mom used on me when we were driving from NH to TX was to fill a grab bag with little inexpensive toys and let us pull one out of the bag every couple of hours. the surprise hit? a pack of pipe cleaners. kept me and my sister entertained for HOURS.

The hexagons are so cute looking. Hmmm, my girls are younger than your boys and I've never flown with them but crayons and paper will keep them occupied for along time. Also a new magazine or book, listening to music on the headphones would be a treat and snacks are a must. I remember cross stitching when I was young on long drives.

I've been wanting to try hexagons too! My suggestion...have the kids play a add-on drawing game.

I just started making these (a little late to the party... I know). I would love that little kit!

so cute!

I forgot the other part -- you can delete this comment so I don't have a double entry --
My son is 1... we plan to use benadryl if necessary. :)

Do you know about Taro Gomi's books? I think they are the AWESOMEST drawing books. Get one before you get on that plane ;-)

Thanks for the chance to win, and cheers from Barcelona, Spain!!!

How awesome! I bet you could entertain a child with a bag of different things. but not let him / her see everything / take everything out at once. so they get a coloring book first. When that gets boring. there is a little checkers game. so on.l I hope I win! Thanks for the awesome giveaway!

This summer I will be traveling with my 6, 4, 3 and 1 year old. I have already started to collect my bag of surprises. But I know the 3 main things I am taking. A dvd player (with movies the boys have not seen - or at least much) for the middle two, a brand new video game for my eldest (will keep him entertained for hours just figuring it out) and lots and lots of snacks (crackers, cookies, suckers, cut up veggies, etc) For some of the smaller things, I made a magnatic tavel game for the older boys and a magnetic creat a scene for the 3 year old. I packed some cryons (marker too messy, pencils break) and a some coloring pages, mazes, logic games, (you know fun sheets for lack of a better word)
As for entertaining the baby I am more at a loss. I am hoping of all hope he will sleep for most of it (crossing my fingers)

How nice it would be to actually have something to do for me! I hope I win.
I hope any of this helps you, Good Luck!

Love those hexagons...I haven't tried any before! I like crayola.com for print out activities for my kids. I make a book of those, blank paper, coloring book pages, mazes and anything else I find each summer to take on all our adventures!

One of the best ways I have heard of to entertain a child (a small one) on a plane is to have several small and inexpensive items hidden away to give to them each hour that goes by. They can be whatever you want, handmade, a little toy, some playdoh, whatever. And each thing is so new and interesting that it keeps them quiet until the next one comes up. P.S. FANTASTIC giveaway! I was thinking of putting together a little pack of hex sewing materials for my 3 hour service appointment at the car dealership tomorrow.

Lovely prizes! I have always been a fan of Colorforms when traveling with kids - no mess. Also those books where you color with the invisible marker and color on the page appears. They make them for bigger kids, too with puzzles and word games. And how about MadLibs for the two older kids!

Awesome giveaway! We do a lot of traveling and one thing that has always helped me is I bring a new (but small) toy that I bring out at some point during our travels (usually when it seems things are getting kind of crazy). It keeps them quite entertained!

woolybooger said...

I used to do scavenger hunts with my kids. I'd whisper an item for them to look for in our travels and they would look for it til they found it. When they found it, I'd give a new item.

I love those hexagons! So pretty! We recently moved from overseas with a three year old and two twin 4 month olds. That was a LONG plane flight. My daughter, however, LOVES stickers. To the point of insanity, so I brought LOTS of those, plus plenty of pretty paper to put them on...and snacks. She's also all about the snacks!

Thanks for the chance. How about puzzle books, electronic yahtzee
